Zaran vs Heray vs Rumi vs Raihan: Four Saffrons Compared

People type "Zaran saffron" and "Heray saffron" into Google more often than they type our name, which is a fair reason to write this page honestly rather than as an advertisement. Below are four saffron brands you will meet on the first page of any search, compared on the things that decide whether a bottle is worth its price: where it says it comes from, what it costs per gram, whether anyone has measured what is in it, and what buyers say. We are the fifth column. Where a rival does something better, it says so.

Comparison

Zaran, Heray, Rumi, Golden and Raihan, side by side.

Five brands, five origins as they state them, prices read from their own storefronts, and one column most comparisons skip: whether the brand publishes a numbered laboratory report with the three ISO 3632 readings, or only the word "tested".

The short version

Cheapest per gram at volumeHeray Spice. At 10 g and above, Heray is roughly half our price per gram, and it publishes lab figures. If price per gram is the whole decision, that is the honest answer.
Most reviewedZaran Saffron, with about 670 reviews on Amazon and a 4.8 average at the time of writing. Zaran sells Persian and Spanish lines at the same price and makes an ISO claim without a linked report.
Widest retail reachRumi Spice, on H-E-B shelves and with a well-known founding story. No published lab report that we could find.
Only full report publishedRaihan. Report 004389, crocin 296.5, picrocrocin 114.2, safranal 32.7, published in full. We are also the most expensive per gram at small sizes and, with three reviews, the least reviewed. Both of those are true at once.

Prices read from each brand's own storefront between 3 August and 1 September 2026; Zaran's review count from its Amazon listing on 1 September. Origin is quoted as each brand states it. A lab report counts only if a numbered document with the three ISO 3632 readings is published where a buyer can read it.

How to read a saffron label

Four things to check before the price.

Origin, stated plainlyHerat, Khorasan, La Mancha, Kashmir. A label that says only "premium" or "grade A" is not telling you where the flower grew, and grade A is not an ISO category.
Grade by the ISO nameSuper Negin, Negin, Sargol and Pushal describe how much of the yellow style is left on the thread. Category I, II and III are the ISO 3632 bands measured in a laboratory. A brand that mixes the two vocabularies usually has not been to the laboratory.
A number, not an adjective"Lab tested" costs nothing to print. A report number and three readings cost a test. Ours is 004389; ask any brand for theirs.
Price per gram, at your sizeA 1 g bottle at $20 and a 1 kg pack at $3,550 are $20.00 and $3.55 a gram. Compare brands at the size you will actually buy, which for most households is 2 g to 5 g.

The one test to run at home

Whichever brand you buy, drop three threads into a glass of warm water and wait ten minutes. Real saffron gives up its gold slowly and the threads stay red. Dyed threads bleed at once and turn pale. It takes thirty seconds to set up and settles most arguments.

The lot in every bottle

Our current lot carries Herat government laboratory report 004389: crocin 296.5, picrocrocin 114.2, safranal 32.7, artificial colorants absent. ISO 3632 Category I on every tested parameter. We test each harvest before we buy it, so a lot that fails is a lot we never own.

Where we stand

We are the newest and the smallest brand in this table, and the only one that publishes its full report. If you want the lowest price per gram, buy Heray. If you want the most-reviewed bottle, buy Zaran. If you want to read the laboratory numbers before you pay, ours are on the press page and on the card that comes in the box.
